ID Models : A Comparison Review

Overview

Transitioning out of the classroom into the world of instructional design, my introduction to this new career path was the foundation of instructional design models and theories that drive desired learning – change in learners’ long-term memory.

Purpose & Process

An instructional design (ID) model provides guidelines to organize appropriate pedagogical scenarios to achieve instructional goals.  As part of a requirement for my master’s program, I created a job aid to compare and contrast three instructional models.  This activity highlighted subtle but important differences and similarities that helped heighten my understanding of ID models.  Six major elements allow ID models to deliver effective learning experiences that deliver desired change. 

  • The first element of an ID model is its learner-centered approach, as the learner’s performance is the focal point. 
  • Second, it adopts a goal-oriented approach because it calls for well-defined goals. 
  • Third, it focused on real-world performance because each designed activity is crafted to help the learner perform behaviors that will be expected of them in the real world. 
  • Fourth, the ID model’s core focus is measuring outcomes reliably and validly, which feeds into the fifth element that tells us that data is at the heart of the process. 
  • Data will tell us whether our techniques have helped our learners reach their goals. 
  • Finally, instructional design is a team effort that involves teamwork.

Storyline 360 

Overview

Middle schools in a school district were transitioning from a traditional grading system to a Standard-Based Grading (SBG). Stakeholders requested a course to ensure everyone involved in the transition understood what each level of proficiency meant to calibrate assessments with this new grading system.

Purpose

This interactive eLearning course includes various activities that engage the learner to develop a deeper understanding of the skills associated with each proficiency level, thus accurately assessing students on mastery of the current standards. In this course, learners recognize SBG’s competitive advantage and test their new knowledge of the specific skills associated with each proficiency level.

My Process

The project launched in a Professional Learning Community (PLC) meeting where staff members shared a desire to come to a common understanding of the specific skills students needed to exhibit to meet each proficiency level and show their current mastery of the content standard.  Next, because this was a new initiative across all middle school campuses in the district, I met with our equity coach.  I completed a needs analysis to determine that an instructional need exists.  After determining a need, we met with subject matter experts (SMEs) at various schools. 

 

From these meetings and interviews, I gathered the content for the course.  Once I collected the content for the course, I completed a task analysis, which dictated the learning objectives.  Finally, I created a flowchart and a storyboard to guide the creation of the learning experience in Storyline  360.

An Introduction to Pear Deck

Overview

During the 2020-2021 academic school year, the district purchased a district-wide Pear Deck premium account for all teachers to help infuse technology into their classrooms and make their lessons more interactive and student-centered.

Purpose

This interactive eLearning course includes various activities that engage the learner to develop a working understanding of the basic skills necessary to integrate Pear Deck into their classroom practice. In this course, learners recognize the advantages of Pear Deck in the classroom, how to create an account, and how to merge Pear Deck into their existing Google Slides lessons.

My Process

The learner analysis I conducted from previous experience working with the school district allowed me to know my audience, their demographics, prior knowledge, and affective needs.  Based on this information, I designed a short, clear, and concise course to answer simple questions to get started with Pear Deck.  The course consists of short informative videos followed by checks for understanding to gradually build the learner’s knowledge of the simple steps to getting started with Pear Deck.

Overview

This microlearning course was created as part of the package to accompany and support the implementation of Pear Deck district-wide.

Purpose

Microlearning is an approach to training characterized by brief learning modules comprising bite-sized learning activities delivered over mobile devices and designed for quick and immediate consumption.  This interactive microlearning course includes various short activities that allow teachers to experience students’ experience with Pear Deck.  In this course, learners experience students’ login process and the different interactive Pear Deck question types.

My Process

Keeping in mind my learner analysis and what drives my target audience, one aspect that resonated was their phones’ crucial role in their daily lives.  As cell phones have become an indispensable part of our daily lives, microlearning courses are the perfect tool to build short learning experiences to keep learners’ attention focused from beginning to end.  And they are served up just in time at the point of contact — exactly when and where they are needed.

This gamification learning experience was created as part of the package to accompany and support the implementation of Pear Deck district-wide.

Purpose & Process

This gamification course includes various activities that engage the learner to familiarize themselves with interactive Pear Deck questions.  To create an impactful gamified experience, I interviewed my target audience to find out what skills and tools they need the most help with.  Understanding the different types of interactive question types was a skill that needed to be developed for successful adoption.  In this gamified learning experience, learners experience game mechanics (points, levels, challenges) to tap into essential human desires (rewards, status, competition) to motivate them to gain a functional understanding of the different interactive question options offered in Pear Deck.
